BabelMeSH enables foreign language searches of MEDLINE/PubMed

Posted on November 3, 2008

Would you prefer to use non-English terms to search MEDLINE/PubMed for biomedical articles? If so, try BabelMeSH. BabelMeSH allows you to search MEDLINE/PubMed using medical terms in the following 12 languages in addition to English:

  • Arabic

  • Chinese

  • Dutch

  • French

  • German

  • Italian

  • Japanese

  • Korean

  • Portuguese

  • Russian

  • Spanish

  • Swedish

An auto-complete feature displays suggested words and phrases in the chosen search language. If there is no exact match, both the chosen search language and English are displayed. Citations and abstracts received are in English. Using accents and other special characters while searching is optional.

From the BabelMeSH page, PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) Linguist searches of MEDLINE/PubMed are also available. PICO Linguist (currently in beta) allows you to find articles based on the following factors of the medical case:

  • Patient/Problem

  • Age and Gender (optional)

  • Intervention

  • Comparison (optional)

  • Outcome (optional)

Locate BabelMeSH using the "Search" box on the Library Web site. BabelMeSH is a product of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
