Difficult to find Library’s site from the “UTSW” website

With the “UTSW” website there is no easy link to the UTSW Library – I almost gave up trying to find it. I guess you want to make it so difficult to use no one will use it.

Williams Textbook of Endrocrinology

I can’t access Williams Textbook of Endocrinology through Electronic Books this week.  Have we discontinued the subscription?  The pediatric endocrinology fellows use it weekly for our board review.

UpToDate

Hi, I am an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at UTSW. I was upset to learn this week that the campus subscription to UpToDate was canceled. This is, in my opinion, a poor decision. I have been a frequent user of UpToDate and find it to be an invaluable resource to use to help make quick and informed decisions about patient health care. I just do not think that the Library Clinical Evidence Resources portal that now has been created comes anywhere close to the UpToDate resource. I think that our patients may ultimately suffer from this decision.
I also do not feel as if there was adequate notification/warning to the community about this change. Now that I go to the UTSW Library Website page, I do see that where was a link under Highlights that says “Subscription Update: UpToDate” — but without clicking on that link, there is no way of knowing that the subscription was to be canceled. Also, we never needed to go to the library website to reach UpToDate before. Unless I missed something, I don’t think there was ever a campus wide discussion on how removal of access to UpToDate would affect the community and our patient-care decision making process. I sure wish there had been, and I sure hope that consideration is given to bringing back UpToDate.
Thank you for “listening” to my criticism.

losing uptodate

am extremely upset that UTSW is losing its subscription to Uptodate. Uptodate has been extremely helpful in my learning as a 3rd year medical student. With uptodate, I know exactly where to go when i have a question. Its the wikipedia of medical resources. Its well written, concise, and easy to read. I could go on and on about it, but all I really need to say is that the resource has been extremely helpful for me, I use it multiple times daily. In fact, it is the ONLY thing that I use because it is so student friendly. I can look up things fast and get clear, easy to understand information on any thing I want. ITS THE ONLY THING THAT I USE FROM YOUR LIBRARY. EVERYTHING ELSE IS WORTHLESS TO ME BECAUSE IT EITHER TAKES TOO MUCH TIME FINDING THE INFORMATION I NEED OR THE INFORMATION IS TOO TECHNICAL FOR MY LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE. i tried your “alternative” to uptodate, and WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. I dont want to have to dig through multiple different resources for one. And two, none of those resources have the format of information that I am looking for. With uptodate I can get a conceptual grasp on the information that I am learning about, and that is what I need as a student. I dont need technical information.

You guys need to find a way to get uptodate, everything else you subscribe to is JUNK for me, an MS3 medical student.

Thank you for your consideration.

luv yas, cont’d

I’m a student at El centro & was referred because of the atmosphere. I came to research a book I’m writing on miracle cures (w/M.D.s & w/o. W/religion & without). The staff is wonderful, the atmosphere is cheery. It’s quiet but not authoritative because people respect each other.
El centro has 3 computer accesses:the library / tutorial / computer lab. The access is limited due to the hours the campus is open. The library isn’t open as a medical library would be. Here I don’t have to move for an unanounced class. I’ve never crowded anyone out that I know of, nor have I ever had to wait – enough to do the job. It’s quiet, friendly, & the staff!
I had a problem w/using images as bullets to make a point. I wasn’t stubborn enough to dig it out or was too stubborn to extract the info from… For 3 months on occasion I struggled w/ the ever-moving images. I’ve been to tutors…but in passing asked Ms. Radley as I was leaving about the problem. I only did so because I’d asked another before & was encouraged to show her an example I didn’t have w/me. I got the info I was unable to extract from M.S.Word’s “help” section & am truing up the document I was using “screensaver” & cropping to cover several pages of notes. This isn’t preferred. I’m so unendingly happy to come here, it’s really inspiring. Your hours, the atmosphere, the help I have been reluctant to use in the past …
Thank you! And when I’m through putting publishers off because one wanted to know if I had anything more than the slivers I’d shown that would sell books (I began illustrating through public domain images & …) I don’t expect to be an overnight success, but … I couldn’t have done what I have w/o this library. Blessings, muchachos. When I have ‘em, you’ll have ‘em.
You guys really are awesome here.

Non-UTSW Members in North Campus Library

Since summer started a month or so ago, I have noticed a trend of unsupervised children of UTSW employees being “dropped off” for the day in the north campus library while their parents/family members work. For the most part, it has not been a problem, but since the beginning of last week, two young men have been continuously using the computers for inappropriate use, talking loudly, and listening to music very loudly via headphones that are audible throughout the entire computer section of the library. Today I came to the north campus library at 9am to find them watching offensively violent Youtube videos, talking to one another at a loud volume, and listening to music very loudly on their headphones that were audible throughout the library. An older gentleman working next to them asked them to please keep it down because it’s a library and they ignored him. They were in the north campus library doing this from 9am until 3pm. I realize that the UTSW library has limited resources, but perhaps there could be someone from the library staff working here during business hours? If not, there needs to be a better way to enforce this. Employees lending their badges away so that their children can come play on the computers and cause major distractions in a library that serves almost half our institution is a major problem.
